Neilmed's Sinus Rinse, Pediatric, Bottle Kit for Saline Nasal Rinse Review

Excellent size for children. Pre-mixed packets make prep easy.
One of our youngest family members (7 years old) suffers from spring time allergies. Running nose, post-nasal drip, clogged-up nose, can't breathe through the nose and ends up snoring and not getting a good night's sleep.
After working through the initial resistance (about a week) of having squirt water up one's nose and a little practice (good instructions with the kit) and making sure the water/solution was the right temp, the little guy got the hang of it and can complete the rinse quickly. Sometimes we get commentary on what's exiting his nasal passages. (Sorry about that - TMI - he's 7 - what else can one expect?)
Even after two allergy seasons, he's only "okay" with it, but does it anyway because he likes that he can breathe easily at bedtime.

NeilMed Sinus Rinse Regular Bottle Kit 1 kit Review

After decades of sinus problems including frequent infections that often required multiple bouts of antibiotics to clear up, I was finally referred to an ENT specialist who prescribed sinus surgery. The partitions between my sinuses were all broken out in endoscopic surgery to allow better drainage. This bottle, in a kit with at least 50 premixed salt/baking soda packets, was required for use after the surgery 3x a day for two weeks and then 2x a day for a few more weeks, to keep the nasal cavities moist and wash out any crusts that had formed.
The sensation of having your sinuses filled with salt water takes a little getting used to, as well as learning how to breathe so as not to inhale the water. I never did get to the point of the other reviewer in letting it wash through my mouth -- ick. I bend over the sink and gently squeeze the bottle until the solution starts running out my other nostril, take the bottle away and snort it out, repeat with other nostril. Takes 3 squirts each side to empty the bottle. I've found I must tilt my head the opposite direction to fully empty that sinus -- i.e. if the bottle tip was inserted in my right nostril, I tilt my head to the left and blow. Have a tissue handy if you lean over later on, because some liquid may accumulate in your lower sinuses and run out when you bend sideways to look under the desk, for instance.
I still use this 2-3x a day whenever I get a cold along with the usual OTC cold meds and since the surgery I have never had to be on antibiotics, even though my sinuses still occasionally get infected I have been able to get over it on my own. The saline is very soothing to inflamed tissues (I also gargle salt water if I have a sore throat due to sinus drainage) and helps rinse out the gunk that causes infection. When the packets run out, just mix 2 parts salt to one part baking soda and use about 3/4 teaspoon of the mixture to dissolve in the bottle.

NeilMed NasaDock Plus Stand 1 ea Review

I purchased the NeilMed Sinus Rinse - 2 Bottles - 250 Premixed Packets - Value Pack and then started looking for something to hold and dry the bottle and nozzle. This gadget fits the bill. The NasaDock also holds quite a supply of packets keeping everything in one place and easy to get to.
I thought the online prices were too high with shipping and after looking in a few drug stores here in town I found this at Rite Aid for $9.99.

This producted was recommended by my ENT doc because I have a deviated septum and am trying to avoid surgery. I cannot find it anywhere in my area and was satisfied with the fact that I could order it online via Amazon and get it as quickly as I did and at a good price. Very impressed with the product and transaction!

Neilmed Sinusurf Surfactant, 1.0- fl. Ounce Review

Neilmed Sinusurf Surfactant, 1.0- fl. Ounce

My ENT told me today, when I complained how expensive SinuSurf is, that its active ingredient is the same as in Johnson's Baby Shampoo, and that I can make my own with a solution of 3 parts baby shampoo to 100 parts of distilled water. I thought SinuSurf smelled familiar.
This is a dandy solution to SinuSurf being so overpriced. I am using it and it works very well. I had little effect from use of twice-daily saline sinus rinses to deal with a sinus infection which produced noxious green slime drip from my nose, along with an awful smell, UNTIL I started using SinuSurf.
Adding two squirts of SinuSurf to 4 ounces of saline solution immediately started clearing the slime out of my sinuses. The awful smell went away after my first use of SinuSurf, and some of the slime comes out with each saline rinse. Plus I had some crusted green mucus come out the first two times I used SinuSurf. It reallly does work as advertised.
It's just too expensive. So make your own. You'll still need to measure two squirts for each rinse though, so you'll need a Sinusurf bottle for that, and have to buy a replacement every once in a while.

NeilMed Sinus Rinse - 2 Bottles - 250 Premixed Packets - Value Pack Review

NeilMed Sinus Rinse - 2 Bottles - 250 Premixed Packets - Value Pack

I've suffered with sinus problems, allergies and colds for most of my life. In 2005, I began using NeilMed Sinus rinse twice a day. I've not had a cold since. After four years of daily use, my first bottle finally sprang a leak. It takes about 16 moderate squeezes to empty the 8 oz. bottle. That comes to approximately 44,720 squeezes in 4 years. Not bad at all. For those of you who wish to save money, mixing your own rinse is simple. Here's my recipe developed after a good bit of research and testing:
A 52 oz. tea pitcher makes enough solution for about 6 rinses.
2 measuring teaspoons of salt. Use Kosher salt, sea salt or pickling-and-canning salt.
1 measuring teaspoon of baking soda.

Before rinsing, warm the mixture in the squeeze bottle (WITHOUT THE NOZZLE) with 2 quick bursts in the microwave careful not to overheat and damage the bottle. Two ten-second bursts work better than one twenty-second burst. It keeps hot spots from forming on the bottle.
I've never owned two microwaves that heated exactly the same.
Shooting cold water inside one's skull can be a real headache. Scalding water is worse.
Rinsing any time of day after doing a dusty or dirty job, especially in pollen season, makes breathing and life in general a lot more pleasant.
Additional note: Many health professionals are now recommending saline sinus rinses as one method to help prevent the H1N1 Virus. Since an adequate supply of Swine Flu vaccine might not be available until late 2010, salt and baking soda rinses seem like a viable alternative.

Extra Large Sinus Rinse Bottle - 16 oz,(NeilMed) Review

Extra Large Sinus Rinse Bottle - 16 oz,(NeilMed)

I was surprised to see that one user had rated this product so low. Unfortunately, some people fail to follow the simeple instructions and they don't receive the full benefit of sinus rinse. I found that the 8oz. bottle was sometimes not enough rinse so I bought this larger bottle and it is wonderful. I use mine in the shower. I will rinse with about 2/3rds of the bottle and then finish my shower about 10 minutes which gives the first round time to soak in. I will then use the remaining 1/3 and this really makes a big difference in flushing out the crud. I used to have sinus infectoins 3-4 times a year. I haven't had a sinus infection since I started using this 2 years ago.
